Freaks and Geeks

Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000) was and is a great show. It only aired for one year before it went the way of most great TV – that’s right it was canceled by FOX. This is a show centering on a brother and sister in High School during the 1980-1981 school year. The sister is a Senior and has been a good student in the Academic crowd, but starts hanging out with the “Stoners” as we would have called them and the brother is a Freshman and hangs out with his two friends who are “Geeks”. This is a great Dramedy about relationships, growing up, family and friends. I sort of enjoy the fact that there is only one season, I would like more of the show, that’s true, but I’m not sure with the sister being out of High School if I would have enjoyed the change in dynamics of the characters if that happened. The show is filled with great music that completely takes you back to the 80’s. Sometimes the songs just bring the show to an even more tangible level. ‘Come Sail Away’ and ‘Lady’ by Styx are used so well, they are major plot points of the show. There is even an episode with old Billy Joel songs (‘Rosalinda’s Eyes’, ‘Don’t Ask Me Why’ and even ‘C’Etait Toi (You Were The One)’) and the guidance counselor singing ‘Eighteen’ by Alice Cooper – priceless. There is a soundtrack out there, but it’s mostly full of the score, with a few nuggets of greatness in that they are the renditions by the characters in the show. I’ve been watching the show again recently on DVD and wanted to put together a more full soundtrack of the actual songs from the time. I’m having some trouble uploading some of the songs, so I’ll just call this Part 1. They use ‘Bad Reputation’ as the theme to the show and it works great.

Bad Reputation|Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Runnin’ With The Devil|Van Halen
I’m ALright|Kenny Loggins
Jesus Is Just Alright|the Doobie Brothers
Gonna Raise Hell|Cheap Trick
Reminiscing|Little River Band
Whipping Post|the Allman Brothers
Box of Rain|Grateful Dead

  1. This is one of the best TV series of all time. It’s cool to see so many of the actors and Apatow making it big now. They should have gotten more attention with this, but at least we have that one and only season. Great music too!
